This illustration merges different scales: from organs to organelles. In blue you see the left hemisphere of the human brain and in orange a half from a mitochondrion, the lung of the cell. When mtochondria are damaged and stop working the autophagy machinery comes to the rescue to eliminate them. When this rescue does not work in the neurons of the brain, neurodegenerative disease initiate such as Parkinsons’ or Alzheimer disease.
