In this illustration the author illustrated a newly discovered cytosolic protein C53 (cyan) that is able to couple the local response to Endoplasmic Reticulum stress with selective autophagy, and is highly conserved in plants (left) and mammalian cells (right), thus functioning as a very ancient quality control mechanism.
