Longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae)

Description:

Longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae)

This insect belongs to a large family of beetles, known as longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae). Species of this family are characterized by long antennae, which are often longer than the beetle’s body. Most of the larvae from this family feed on the wood of dead trees. The scientific name goes back to a figure from Greek mythology: the shepherd Cerambus, who after a quarrel with nymphs, was transformed by them into a beetle with long horns. During this step, autophagy is induced so that this beetle can survive while the transformation occurs.
